What is your FIRE Number?

Your FIRE Number is the portfolio size you need to generate enough passive income to cover your living expenses indefinitely.

It is calculated by dividing your expected annual retirement expenses by your safe withdrawal rate (SWR). For example, if you need $40,000 per year and use a 4% SWR, your FIRE number is $40,000 / 0.04 = $1,000,000.

Understanding Safe Withdrawal Rates

The Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR) is the percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw in your first year of retirement, adjusting that amount for inflation in subsequent years, without depleting your portfolio over a standard retirement period (historically 30 years).

The most famous study on this is the Trinity Study, which established the "4% Rule". However, early retirees (who may be retired for 40-50 years) often prefer a more conservative SWR of 3% to 3.5%.
